Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên wins four gold medals in competitive swimming return

Renowned Vietnamese swimmer Nguyễn Thị Ánh Viên has made a high-profile return to competitive swimming after a four-year hiatus. Competing in the swimming and diving pre-tournament for the 2026 National Sports Games in Ho Chi Minh City, she secured four gold medals in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle, and 200m individual medley.

Ánh Viên, representing the Defense 4 Sports Training Center, stated that her return is driven by a continued passion for the sport and a desire to inspire younger swimmers rather than a pursuit of medals or proving her competitive standing. While coaches noted that her times are slower than her peak professional years, her performance remains dominant in the current field.

Beyond her competitive comeback, Ánh Viên has transitioned into coaching and content creation, focusing on teaching swimming and promoting water safety for children. Her return marks a significant moment for Vietnamese swimming, following a period where the nation's performance in Olympic-style disciplines has faced challenges at major regional events like the Asiad.
