NHAI introduces independent design checks for major highway bridges

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a uniform mechanism for the independent verification of designs and drawings for major bridges, viaducts, and other critical highway structures. The policy, which is set to take effect on December 1, 2026, aims to enhance structural safety, durability, and construction quality across National Highway projects.

The new mandate applies to all new Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) projects. It also covers eligible ongoing projects where design verification has not yet commenced. Under this system, designs will be examined by empanelled Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), reputed government technical institutions, and experienced technical firms.

Verification will include structural design calculations, engineering analysis, and hydrological or hydraulic studies. The policy specifically targets major river bridges with a design discharge of at least 3,000 cubic metres per second, structures with an effective span of 40 metres or more, and other complex structures. The goal is to identify design deficiencies early and ensure compliance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) codes and technical specifications.
