NHAI launches IIT-backed bridge design review and Himachal monsoon safety monitoring

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) announced plans to empanel about 12 Indian Institutes of Technology, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur, to conduct independent proof‑checking of hydraulic studies and structural design calculations for major bridge projects on national highways. The reviews will cover engineering drawings, construction methods, geotechnical and hydraulic investigations, aiming to ensure bridges designed for a 100‑year service life meet rigorous quality standards.

Separately, NHAI identified vulnerable, accident‑prone stretches in Himachal Pradesh that are prone to landslides, slope failures and flooding during the monsoon season. The agency has carried out hill‑protection works, slope stabilization, retaining walls, improved drainage, anti‑erosion measures and construction of protective bridges. Enhanced monitoring, emergency response equipment and coordination with district administrations, police and disaster‑management authorities are being deployed to minimise disruptions and safeguard traffic flow.
