NHAI to upgrade 1033 highway helpline with AI and real-time tracking

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to upgrade its existing 1033 National Highway Helpline with advanced technologies to improve emergency assistance for travelers. The initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI), real-time location tracking, and smart emergency-response systems to provide faster and more coordinated help during accidents, medical emergencies, or vehicle breakdowns.

The upgraded system is designed to identify the caller's location automatically and understand various Indian languages through AI-assisted speech recognition. This will allow for more efficient dispatching of appropriate resources, such as ambulances, cranes, or patrol vehicles, based on the specific needs of the situation.

The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development, design, deployment, and maintenance of this next-generation helpline and call center. While technology will drive the response, human operators will remain essential for decision-making in critical emergency scenarios.
