NHIA leadership vows crackdown on corruption and fraud

Leadership at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced intensified measures to combat corruption and ensure the integrity of healthcare resource management.

Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, Director General of the NHIA, emphasized the need for stronger institutional accountability and transparency to prevent resource leakages that undermine medical access. Ohiri noted that the authority is pursuing reforms such as the digitization of financial management processes and clearing audit backlogs to improve service delivery efficiency.

In a separate address, CEO Dr. Victor Bampoe warned that any staff found conniving with service providers to defraud subscribers through illegal out-of-pocket payments will face dismissal and prosecution. Bampoe highlighted that despite significant government investment and prompt payment of claims to facilities, some patients are still being charged for covered services, a practice he stated undermines the sustainability of the scheme.
