NHIA reports high insurance coverage in Ahafo and GH¢382.85 million in provider payments
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced significant milestones regarding health insurance coverage and provider reimbursements in Ghana. In the Ahafo Region, health insurance coverage reached 87% in 2025, exceeding the annual target by 110%. This marks the second consecutive year the region has achieved what the NHIA defines as Universal Health Coverage within its operational scope.
NHIA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe noted that the Ahafo Region was the first to implement the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC) system, a digital tool designed to prevent identity fraud and protect public funds by requiring a unique code to confirm patient attendance at facilities.
On a national level, the NHIA disbursed GH¢382.85 million in claims to healthcare providers during September 2026. This brings the total cumulative claims paid by the Authority this year to GH¢2.115 billion. Of the September disbursement, public healthcare facilities received GH¢197.32 million, private facilities received GH¢128.95 million, and mission facilities received GH¢56.58 million.
