NHK drama Blossom premieres, following life of novelist modeled on Chiyo Uno

The NHK morning drama series ‘Blossom’ has premiered, chronicling the life of Tama Hano, a character modeled after the prolific writer Chiyo Uno. The series follows Hano through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras as she overcomes various hardships to become a successful novelist.

Lead actress Shizuka Ishibashi portrays the protagonist throughout her adult life, while Mariko Kaga appears in the opening episodes to depict Hano in her 80s. The production has garnered significant social media attention for its high-profile cast, including Takako Matsu, and its portrayal of Hano’s difficult childhood in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Early episodes highlight the strict and erratic nature of Hano’s father, Seiji, a character inspired by the real-life historical accounts of Chiyo Uno’s father. The series features a theme song by YOASOBI, ‘Sakihokore,’ and explores themes of resilience and finding happiness amidst life’s turbulence.
