NHK morning drama Blossom to premiere September 28
NHK is set to premiere its new morning drama series, ‘Blossom’, on September 28. The story follows the life of Tamano Hayano, a character modeled after the real-life novelist Uno Chiyo, as she navigates the turbulent Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. The narrative tracks her journey from her upbringing in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, through various hardships including the Great Kanto Earthquake and wartime, eventually finding success as a writer.
Starring Shizuka Ishibashi as the protagonist, the production features an ensemble cast including Mariko Kaga, Takako Matsu, and Atsuro Watabe. The series aims to depict the complexities of Chiyo's life, including her multiple marriages and personal struggles, rather than presenting a purely idealized biography.
Ahead of the premiere, the visual design of the protagonist has sparked discussion among viewers on social media. Some viewers expressed dissatisfaction with the hairstyle chosen for the character's schoolgirl years, noting it appeared unflattering. However, the production team, including makeup artist UDA, defended the choice, stating that the intentional ‘distortion’ in the character's appearance is meant to highlight her unique beauty and individuality.
