NHL breakout players face scrutiny following 2025-26 season

Following the 2025-26 NHL season, several breakout players are facing scrutiny over whether their high-level production can be sustained.

San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini, who recorded 45 goals and 115 points, has signed a five-year contract extension worth $18.8 million per season. In another significant roster development, Leo Carlsson accepted an $18 million per year, five-year offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers, which was subsequently matched by the Anaheim Ducks.

Other players identified as having significant potential for the upcoming season include Matt Savoie of the Edmonton Oilers, Jimmy Snuggerud and Mason McTavish of the St. Louis Blues, and Ivan Demidov of the Montreal Canadiens. Matthew Knies of the Toronto Maple Leafs is also noted for his performance despite injury challenges.
