Mike Babcock cleared to coach Edmonton Oilers after NHL investigation

The National Hockey League completed a review of former coach Mike Babcock’s brief tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The league concluded that, "even in the least favorable light, there is no current basis to restrict his employment in the league," and therefore cleared him to be hired by the Edmonton Oilers.

Babcock resigned from Columbus in September 2023 after allegations that he asked players to show personal photos from their phones, a claim that prompted an NHL Players’ Association‑led inquiry. He has not coached an NHL game since November 2019, when he was dismissed by the Toronto Maple Leafs. His résumé includes a 2008 Stanley Cup win with the Detroit Red Wings and two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada (2010, 2014).

The Oilers, who fired head coach Kris Knoblauch following a first‑round playoff loss, are now free to pursue Babcock as their next head coach.
