NHL expansion efforts focus on US and international markets

The National Hockey League (NHL) is focusing its expansion efforts on American and international markets rather than Canada or Europe. While there is significant interest in adding a team in Texas, specifically Houston, to create regional rivalries and balance the league's conferences, the prospect of an eighth Canadian franchise through expansion appears unlikely due to market size and business considerations.

Regarding European expansion, NHL President of Business Keith Wachtel stated that the league is not currently looking to place teams in Europe. Instead, the organization aims to grow the sport by working with existing European federations and leagues. However, the NHL is increasing its international presence through regular-season games in Germany, including scheduled matchups for the Edmonton Oilers and Boston Bruins, and maintaining a league office in Switzerland.
