NHL eyes Texas expansion with potential announcement by year-end

The NHL is advancing discussions to add a 33rd franchise, with a potential announcement expected by the end of this year. The expansion is centered in Texas, where billionaire Dan Friedkin’s ownership group has agreed to a $2 billion expansion fee. While Houston is currently the priority market, Austin remains a secondary option depending on arena availability.

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly indicated that if the transaction is finalized and approved by the Board of Governors, the new team could begin play as early as the 2029-30 season. The league is also exploring possibilities for a 34th team, with ongoing discussions involving markets such as Atlanta and Phoenix.

In contrast to the American expansion, Canadian markets face hurdles. While Quebec City possesses a strong hockey culture and a high-quality arena, Daly noted a lack of interested investment groups willing to fund a new franchise in the region.
