NHL news: Ovechkin retirement and major player updates
The 2026-27 NHL season has opened with several major storylines involving star players. Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals captain and all-time goals leader, has announced that the current season will be his last in the league.
In injury news, Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber underwent successful surgery following a fractured skull sustained during a preseason game. There is currently no timetable for his return, which is expected to impact Minnesota’s defensive depth.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck remains sidelined without pay after requesting a trade. Hellebuyck cited alleged threats against him and his family as the reason for his request. He has skipped training camp and the start of the regular season while awaiting a trade.
Additionally, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets completed a six-player trade. Toronto acquired wingers Kirill Marchenko and Miles Wood, along with goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, in exchange for winger Matthew Knies, defenseman Emil Andrae, forward Steven Lorentz, and a 2027 second-round pick. Marchenko has since signed a six-year extension with Toronto.
