NHL players face deadline for eight-year contract extensions

The NHL is approaching a critical deadline on September 15, marking the final day for players to sign eight-year contract extensions under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Starting September 16, new CBA rules will reduce the maximum contract length for re-signing existing players to seven years, and to six years for unrestricted free agents.

Several high-profile players are central to this transition. Reports indicate progress in contract talks for Anaheim Ducks prospect Cutter Gauthier, though experts suggest a five-year deal may be more likely than the eight-year maximum. Other notable players facing this deadline include Adam Fantilli and Drake Batherson, the latter of whom has already re-upped with the Ottawa Senators.

Other teams have utilized this window to secure long-term deals, such as the Buffalo Sabres signing Noah Ostlund and the Washington Capitals signing Ryan Leonard to eight-year contracts. The Philadelphia Flyers are also being discussed as a potential participant in these final negotiations, specifically regarding winger Matvei Michkov.
