NHL Scouting Combine Highlights Top Prospects J.P. Hurlbert and Gavin McKenna

Texas‑born winger J.P. Hurlbert, the WHL Rookie of the Year and a University of Michigan commit, is projected to be a first‑round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. He finished fourth in WHL scoring with 42 goals and 55 assists in 68 games and is praised for his shot and defensive awareness. Hurlbert said, "There's so much that goes into the game and trying to develop. I think working on my strengths and working on my weaknesses at the same time is kind of a big priority. I'm just super grateful to kind of be in the opportunity that I'm at," and added, "For me, I think it's my shot."

At the NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo, the Vancouver Canucks have scheduled a dinner with projected first‑overall pick Gavin McKenna, joining three other prospects. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who hold the first overall selection, are not expected to meet McKenna at the combine, having already visited his hometown and conducted extensive interviews. McKenna is widely regarded as the top prospect in the draft class, noted for his offensive creativity and hockey sense.
