NHL Tri-State teams prepare for upcoming season after disappointing campaigns
Following disappointing 2025-26 seasons for the Tri-State area NHL teams, the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, and New York Islanders are looking to improve their standing in the Metropolitan Division.
The New York Rangers, who finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference last season, have been aggressive in free agency to address offensive production and defensive depth. Key additions include wingers Pavel Dorofeyev, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and Eeli Tolvanen, along with defensemen Sean Durzi and Marcus Pettersson. Star defenseman Adam Fox is expected to be a critical component for the team's success, provided he remains healthy after missing significant time last season.
The New Jersey Devils missed the playoffs last year, finishing seventh in their division. While the roster has seen rejuvenation, concerns remain regarding goaltending depth following the trade of Jacob Markstrom.
The New York Islanders, who were the strongest of the three teams last season, saw success driven by Matthew Schaefer’s rookie campaign and Ilya Sorokin’s performance. However, the team lacked the depth required to secure a playoff spot and enters the new season seeking more power and consistency.
