NHPC seeks forest clearance for 1,720 MW Kamala Hydel Project
The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has applied for forest clearance to divert approximately 3,278 hectares of land in Arunachal Pradesh for the proposed 1,720 MW Kamala Hydroelectric Project. The project is planned on the Kamala River, a right-bank tributary of the Subansiri River.
If approved, the diversion could result in the felling of approximately 2,340,213 trees across the Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey districts. The requested land includes 439 hectares of very dense forest and 1,119 hectares of moderately dense forest. The project is designed as a run-of-the-river-cum-storage scheme featuring a 216-metre-high concrete gravity dam and an underground powerhouse.
The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) is scheduled to consider the proposal. While the project aims to generate roughly 6,870 million units of electricity annually, it has raised environmental concerns regarding wildlife habitats, biodiversity, and the impact on local communities. Under the Forest Conservation Act, compensatory afforestation obligations may be fulfilled in other states due to the high forest cover in Arunachal Pradesh.
