NHRC seeks report on illegal quarrying near Simlipal National Park

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested an Action Taken Report from the Mayurbhanj District Magistrate regarding allegations of illegal stone quarrying in the foothills of Simlipal National Park. The NHRC directed the official to conduct an inquiry and submit findings within two weeks.

A complaint filed by rights activist Akhand alleges that unauthorized quarrying is occurring at night using drilling machines and explosives. The complainant claims that blasting has caused tremors and loud explosions in villages such as Saratchandrapur and Bankasahi, leading to structural cracks in homes, particularly mud houses belonging to vulnerable families.

Additional allegations include quarrying conducted without environmental clearances or necessary approvals, contributing to deforestation, hill cutting, and pollution. The complaint also notes that over 50 stone-laden trucks pass through the area daily, impacting road safety and local livelihoods. The NHRC stated that if the allegations are proven true, they would constitute serious human rights violations.
