NHRC seeks report on woman's assault in Rajasthan

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the reported assault and public humiliation of a woman in the Banswara district of Rajasthan. The action follows media reports alleging that on September 1, 2026, a woman was beaten with sticks and paraded semi-nude by her husband and other relatives after her hair was forcibly cut. The incident reportedly occurred following accusations that the woman had left her home with another man, and the matter gained attention after a video surfaced on social media.

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Rajasthan government and the Superintendent of Police in Banswara, requesting a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission noted that if the allegations are true, they represent serious violations of the victim’s rights to life and dignity. The requested reports must include the current status of the investigation and details regarding any compensation provided to the victim.
