NHS England Deploys Microsoft 365 Copilot to 505,000 Staff

NHS England announced that 505,000 clinicians and support staff will receive access to Microsoft 365 Copilot, marking the largest AI deployment in a health service worldwide. The rollout follows a pilot involving 30,000 workers across 90 NHS organisations, which reported an average saving of 43 minutes of administrative work per day per employee. The first licences will be issued in July 2026, with full deployment expected by October 2026. The contract, worth about £120 million, is part of the UK government’s broader investment in digital infrastructure and the 10‑Year Health Plan. Copilot will handle tasks such as drafting clinical letters, summarising meetings, preparing discharge documentation, analysing spreadsheets and supporting HR and finance functions. All data will be processed within UK Azure regions, and Microsoft is contractually barred from using NHS data to train its models. Health Innovation and Safety Minister Preet Kaur Gill said the programme aims to free clinicians’ time for patient care. NHS officials anticipate that the cumulative time saved could translate to roughly 3,600 full‑time‑equivalent roles redirected from paperwork to direct patient services, though training and governance remain key challenges.
