NHS and NSW expand pharmacist prescribing powers

In England, the NHS is expanding its ‘Pharmacy First’ scheme this autumn to allow pharmacists to treat five additional common conditions: acne, migraines, scabies, certain ear infections, and allergic rhinitis. This expansion aims to reduce pressure on GP practices and emergency departments during the winter months. The service, which has already facilitated 14 million consultations since February 2024, is expected to add another two to three million annual consultations once fully implemented.

In Australia, the New South Wales government has announced a trial to expand the scope of practice for community pharmacists. Under this initiative, pharmacists will be able to manage chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and high blood pressure, as well as provide wound care. Additionally, from January 2027, NSW community pharmacists will be authorized to administer all vaccinations under the National Immunisation Program. While pharmacy leaders have welcomed these moves to improve local access, some medical organizations, including the AMA, have expressed concerns regarding the potential fragmentation of patient care.
