NHS England faces rising waiting lists and corridor treatments amid winter pressure warnings
Healthcare leaders in England have issued warnings regarding impending winter pressures as NHS waiting lists continue to rise. Data indicates that the waiting list for routine hospital treatments in England increased for the second consecutive month, reaching an estimated 7.37 million treatments for 6.24 million patients by the end of August.
In September, nearly 100,000 patients in England received treatment in hospital corridors, marking the highest monthly figure on record. The Royal College of Nursing has cautioned that this overcrowding increases pressure on both patients and staff, advocating for urgent improvements in social and community care capacity to prepare for the winter season.
Comparatively, Scotland reported approximately 588,073 individuals on outpatient, inpatient, or day case waiting lists as of late August 2026. While England's patient-to-population ratio was approximately 10.6% in mid-2025, Scotland's ratio was roughly 11.5% during the same period.
