NHS England launches catch‑up vaccine campaign for measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox

Around one million families in England are being asked to ensure their children aged 12 months to 11 years receive a catch‑up dose of the combined measles‑mumps‑rubella‑varicella (MMRV) vaccine. The campaign targets children who have missed one or both routine doses; parents of children under six will be contacted directly by their GP, while those with children aged six to 11 will be notified via the NHS App, SMS, email or letter. The drive runs until March 2027.

Public Health England data show more than 800 measles cases and two deaths in the first half of 2026, with vaccination coverage for the full two‑dose MMR schedule at 84.1% for five‑year‑olds—well below the World Health Organization’s 95% target. The country lost its measles‑elimination status earlier this year.

NHS Director of Vaccination Caroline Temmink said, "Measles can be devastating for families…these childhood illnesses are serious and some of them in rare cases can be fatal, but they are entirely preventable." Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson added, "Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious diseases such as measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox. If you’ve been contacted by the NHS to catch up on your child’s vaccinations, I encourage you to take up this offer as soon as possible."
