NHS receives £140m boost for urgent care ahead of winter

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced a £140 million investment to bolster urgent care capacity across England as the NHS prepares for a difficult winter season. The funding is designated for 14 different schemes, including the establishment of new urgent care centres, upgrades to emergency departments, and improvements to ambulance fleets.

Officials warned that this winter is expected to be more challenging than usual following a summer of extreme heat that saw record A&E attendance, with nearly 7.3 million people visiting emergency departments between June and August. Experts have highlighted a potential ‘twin crisis’ involving the lingering effects of summer heatwaves combined with seasonal illnesses such as flu, norovirus, and Covid-19.

NHS leadership noted that hospital admissions for certain viruses have already shown ‘ominous’ signs of an early flu season. The investment aims to facilitate same-day emergency care and urgent treatment to reduce pressure on emergency departments and ensure patients receive appropriate care in the correct setting.
