NHTSA data highlights high motorcycle accident risks
Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) highlights the significant safety risks associated with motorcycle riding. According to the agency, motorcyclists are approximately 28 times more likely to die in a crash per mile traveled than occupants of passenger cars.
In a single year, 88,899 motorcyclists were involved in accidents resulting in injury or death. With 9,516,910 motorcycles registered in the United States during that period, the crash rate for fatal or injury-causing accidents stood at 0.93% of all motorcycles.
Several factors contribute to the increased vulnerability of riders, including a lack of protective features like airbags and seat belts, a smaller physical profile that makes them harder for other drivers to see, road hazards such as potholes, and inherent stability issues associated with two-wheeled vehicles.
