NHTSA investigates Ford engine failures in 135,000 vehicles
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Ford vehicles due to significant safety risks. The probe focuses on approximately 135,000 units of the Fiesta, Focus, and EcoSport models manufactured between 2014 and 2021.
The investigation centers on the 1.0L turbo EcoBoost engine family, which utilizes an oil-bathed timing belt. Preliminary findings suggest that the belt material may degrade, creating debris that obstructs the oil pump pickup screen. This obstruction leads to reduced oil pressure and can cause sudden engine power loss or complete engine seizure while driving.
To date, roughly 355 incidents have been recorded, often preceded by an oil pressure warning light. The NHTSA noted that these failures can occur even with routine maintenance and often without sufficient warning to the driver. The agency stated that there is an ‘unacceptable risk to vehicle safety’ based on current data and failure rates.
