NHTSA reviews vehicle headlight regulations for the first time in 30 years
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a rulemaking effort to modernize federal vehicle lighting standards. This marks the first major review of headlight regulations since 1997.
The agency is investigating several issues related to driver visibility and safety, specifically addressing complaints regarding headlight glare. The review will examine how modern technology, such as LED lighting, affects other road users. Key areas of focus include the height and aim of headlamps, automatic high beams, dusk sensors, and the use of replaceable light sources.
As taller vehicles like SUVs and lifted pickup trucks become more common, the impact of headlight glare on drivers of lower vehicles has become a significant safety concern. The NHTSA aims to evaluate how headlamp height and aim affect visibility and intends to streamline testing procedures for materials like plastic optics. Additionally, the agency is looking to align U.S. vehicle lighting regulations with international safety standards.
