Niš and Varaždin implement bicycle subsidies to promote mobility

Cities in Serbia and Croatia are implementing financial incentives to promote bicycle use and sustainable mobility.

The City Council of Niš, Serbia, has decided to allocate 10 million dinars to provide vouchers for purchasing bicycles. This initiative aims to encourage citizens to use bicycles to help reduce air pollution. Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović previously announced that the vouchers would be worth 10,000 dinars each. The funds will be drawn from unallocated surplus revenue from previous years and managed by the City Administration for Property, Economy, and Environmental Protection.

In Varaždin, Croatia, more than 760 citizens utilized municipal subsidies this year for bicycle maintenance or purchase. The city allocated approximately 48,400 euros toward these measures, nearly exhausting its 50,000 euro budget. The program provided up to 50 euros for servicing existing bicycles and 100 euros for the purchase of new ones. Deputy Mayor Miroslav Marković stated that the high participation rate demonstrates citizen support for sustainable transport and emphasized the city's commitment to improving cycling infrastructure.
