Niš protests over Humska street railway bypass

Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović of Niš urged residents not to panic and to await an official proposal from the Institute for Urban Planning on the Humska street project. The €153 million railway‑bypass, funded by the European Union, will modernise the existing line, shift tracks away from the city centre and create new traffic loops. Officials say the work will benefit more than 100 000 citizens by eliminating dangerous level‑crossings.

Residents of the Crveni Krst neighbourhood announced a peaceful protest for the evening of 1 August, fearing that closing Humska street will cut off a key traffic artery, hinder emergency‑service access and harm local businesses. Protesters demanded an alternative urban‑planning solution that would not block normal life in the area.
