Niš residents revitalize urban spaces through community projects
Residents and local organizations in Niš, Serbia, have completed several community-led urban improvement projects aimed at enhancing shared living spaces.
In Branka Krsmanovića Street, an inter-block area was transformed into a green oasis through the European “Urbakt – accelerator for pioneers” project. The space now features trees, a rain garden containing approximately 120 species of medicinal plants, benches, waste bins, and children's furniture. The project involved residents through four workshops to ensure the design met the needs of the approximately 600 local inhabitants.
In Uroša Predića Street, residents renovated a communal courtyard with financial support from the Local Foundation Niš. The renovation included repairing gates and fences, painting walls, and installing a pavilion for shade, along with garden tables and benches. Local children contributed to the aesthetic improvement by painting murals and symbols on the newly painted walls.
