Niš traffic accidents involving unsupervised horses increase
A series of traffic accidents involving unsupervised horses has been reported in Niš, Serbia. In the most recent incident on the road toward Donje Međurovo, a horse from a herd of approximately 30 animals wandered onto the road, causing a collision that left a 32-year-old driver injured and his vehicle destroyed. Due to the severity of its injuries, the horse had to be euthanized.
This follows a nearly identical accident on September 4 on the same route, where a horse also died. Dušan Stojanović, president of the association ‘Zoo planet’, stated that at least five such accidents involving unsupervised, unchipped, and unmarked horses have occurred in the Niš area since the beginning of the year. Previous incidents were reported in the Ledena Stena neighborhood and on the road from the ‘Niš jug’ toll ramp toward the 9. maj neighborhood.
Activists are calling for urgent intervention from authorities to identify the owners of these animals and implement measures to prevent them from entering roadways, citing the significant risk to both animal welfare and human life.
