Niagara Peninsula faces flood warnings and agricultural damage assessments

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) has issued a flood warning for the Niagara Peninsula, southeastern Hamilton, and eastern Haldimand County due to expected severe thunderstorms. While major flooding of large watercourses is not anticipated, the NPCA warns of potential flash flooding in urbanized and small watercourses, as well as localized flooding in low-lying areas. Rainfall amounts could exceed 90 mm in some locations.

Separately, agricultural assessments continue in the Niagara region following severe flooding in early August. Fruit growers are evaluating the long-term impact on stone fruit crops, such as peaches and pears. Concerns include tree stress, potential root rot from prolonged submersion, and reduced yields. The region produces 95 percent of Ontario’s stone fruit, and growers are monitoring whether trees will survive until the next spring.
