Niagara Peninsula faces flooding and sewage backups

Torrential rains in the Niagara Peninsula have caused significant flooding and sewage backups following multiple heavy precipitation events since late July. In St. Catharines, some areas have received nearly 400 millimeters of rain since mid-July.

The flooding has impacted vineyards, agricultural lands, businesses, and residential areas. The Club LaSalle, a central hub for the local Francophone community, has suffered major damage due to two separate incidents of raw sewage flooding caused by sewer system reflux during heavy storms. Local officials and community representatives are calling for infrastructure corrections to address the issues caused by the regional stormwater management reservoirs.
