Niagara Region incumbents face scrutiny over municipal election campaigning
As municipal elections approach in the Niagara Region, questions have emerged regarding the potential misuse of corporate resources by incumbent mayors Mat Siscoe in St. Catharines and Jim Diodati in Niagara Falls.
In St. Catharines, allegations involve the use of municipal staff to produce campaign media, the use of a mayoral social media presence for political purposes, and the appearance of campaign billboards before permitted dates. In Niagara Falls, concerns center on official city advertising, such as restaurant placemats, which feature QR codes directing users to the incumbent mayor’s campaign website.
Under the Municipal Elections Act, candidates are prohibited from using public resources for personal political gain to ensure a fair playing field. While the Act requires municipalities to establish these rules, it lacks detailed guidance on enforcement and the underlying principles of maintaining a separation between taxpayer-funded municipal business and individual political campaigning.
In other regional contests, the mayoral race in Welland remains competitive among Pat Chiocchio, Graham Speck, and April Jeffs. In St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, prediction platforms currently suggest high probabilities of re-election for the incumbents Siscoe and Diodati.
