Niamey begins construction on third water treatment plant

Construction has officially begun on a third water treatment plant in Niamey, Niger, located in the village of Karey Gorou. The project, launched on October 6, 2026, is a partnership between Niger and the World Bank Group.

The facility is expected to have a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day. The project is divided into nine lots with an estimated cost of approximately 60 billion FCFA, part of a larger 166 billion FCFA investment. According to Minister of Environment, Hydraulics, and Sanitation Maizama Abdoulaye, the plant aims to significantly increase the potable water supply for 450,000 residents in Niamey and surrounding areas, supporting urban expansion and public health.

In preparation for this expansion, existing infrastructure such as the Goudel treatment plant continues to serve the capital. The Goudel plant currently produces 140,000 cubic meters of water per day, utilizing chemical treatments and real-time monitoring to meet WHO standards for pH and turbidity.
