Nicanor Ciochină appeals seven-year sentence to Supreme Court
Nicanor Ciochină, the former mayor of Boldurești, has appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice following a decision by the Centru Court of Appeal to uphold his seven-year prison sentence. The conviction pertains to a fatal accident involving a 14-year-old adolescent.
Ciochină’s defense attorney, Dumitru Buliga, has requested an acquittal, arguing that his client did not commit the act for which he was convicted. Ciochină has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, suggesting the case has political undertones.
Conversely, the lawyer representing the victim's family, Dorin Podlisnic, has dismissed the appeal as unfounded. He argued that the previous rulings were legally sound and well-reasoned, stating that an acquittal would be “in the realm of the fantastic.” A date for the Supreme Court hearing has not yet been established.
