Honduras, Nicaragua, and Venezuela report major criminal court rulings

In Honduras, the Court of Appeals has upheld the formal processing and pretrial detention of several individuals linked to the Koriun Inversiones case. Among those remaining in custody are former manager Iván Velásquez Castro, accused of money laundering, disobedience, illegal weapons possession, and criminal association, as well as Marcos Abel Villeda Galdámez and Juan Carlos García Ríos. Kefy Esmeralda Gavarrete Sánchez also had her processing confirmed but will remain free under specific precautionary measures due to her postpartum status.

In Nicaragua, a criminal network of 14 people, including family members and former employees of Seguros LAFISE, has been charged with aggravated fraud and organized crime. The group allegedly defrauded the insurer of approximately 4.28 million córdobas (roughly $117,000) by fabricating insurance claims through fictitious traffic accidents and falsified documentation between 2023 and 2025.

In Venezuela, the judiciary has issued sentences in the ‘Brazalete Blanco’ case. Ten individuals were convicted of conspiracy and concealment, with prison terms ranging from 3 to 18 years. Notable among the convicted is Ányelo Julio Heredia, who received 18 years for conspiracy. Conversely, four individuals, including human rights defender Rocío San Miguel, were acquitted and granted full freedom.
