Nicaragua honors deceased labor leader José Ángel Bermúdez
The Nicaraguan government, through the National Assembly and the Presidency, has issued posthumous honors to José Ángel Bermúdez Lazo, a prominent labor leader and Sandinista militant.
During a ceremony attended by his family, the National Assembly awarded him the Gold Medal of Honor, while the Presidency granted him the Order of Commander José Benito Escobar. These distinctions recognize his long-standing service to the working class, his leadership within the National Workers' Front (FNT) and the National Union of Employees (UNE-FNT), and his historical role in defending labor rights and national sovereignty.
Gustavo Porras, President of the National Assembly, highlighted Bermúdez’s commitment to social causes and his participation in significant historical movements, including the literacy crusade and labor strikes during the 1990s.
