Nicaragua advances river monitoring and mangrove conservation

Nicaragua is advancing several environmental conservation initiatives focused on river ecosystems and coastal protection. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA) conducted 430 aquatic and terrestrial monitoring sessions along the San Juan River during the first half of 2026. These efforts include the use of 11 environmental management infrastructures, the installation of camera traps in the Bartola and Los Guatuzos sectors to track wildlife, and the release of local fauna to aid species recovery.

Additionally, the National Assembly of Nicaragua has approved the ratification of the International Mangrove Center. This initiative, established under the Ramsar Convention, aims to facilitate global cooperation for the restoration and management of mangrove ecosystems. The project targets the protection of approximately 102,000 hectares of mangroves across Nicaragua’s Pacific and Caribbean coasts, which serve as critical defenses against climate change and hurricanes while supporting local indigenous and Afro-descendant communities.
