Nicaragua conducts constitutional reform consultations and historical commemorations

Nicaragua is conducting a series of popular consultations across multiple departments, including Río San Juan, Nueva Segovia, Granada, Carazo, Masaya, and Rivas, regarding proposed constitutional reforms. Arling Alonso, Vice President of the National Assembly, reported that thousands of citizens—including youth, entrepreneurs, and people with disabilities—have participated in these meetings across 59 municipalities to share opinions on the reforms.

In parallel, Copresident Rosario Murillo has announced upcoming commemorations for the 50th anniversary of the death of Carlos Fonseca Amador, the founder of the FSLN. The government plans to mark this milestone with social and cultural projects. Additionally, Murillo paid tribute to the historical significance of the October 13 raid on the San Carlos barracks, emphasizing the legacy of the combatants and the historical brotherhood between Nicaragua and Costa Rica.

Cultural identity also remains a focus, with university initiatives promoting historical memory and indigenous resistance, alongside government rhetoric highlighting the resilience of Nicaragua’s original and Afro-descendant peoples.
