Nicaragua celebrates traditional festivities for the Virgin of the Assumption

Nicaraguan cities are celebrating traditional religious festivities in honor of the Virgin of the Assumption. In León, the city marked the 79th anniversary of the ‘Gritería Chiquita’ on August 14. This tradition originated in 1947 when residents sought divine intervention to stop violent eruptions from the Cerro Negro volcano.

During the celebration, participants traverse the streets of León with songs, prayers, and religious altars, receiving gifts such as sweets and fruit from local residents. The festivities include cultural expressions like the ‘La Gigantona’ and ‘Enano Cabezón’ dances, as well as ‘toros encuetados’ parades.

Simultaneously, the city of Juigalpa is holding traditional festivities in honor of its patron saint, the Virgin of the Assumption. The celebrations in Juigalpa include bullfights at the Vicente Hurtado Catarrán Municipal Bullring, drawing large crowds of local and international visitors to participate in the cultural heritage of the Chontales department.
