OAS to convene foreign ministers to discuss Nicaragua sanctions

The Organization of American States (OAS) is preparing for a high-level meeting to address the political crisis in Nicaragua. The Permanent Council is scheduled to meet on September 23 to finalize the calendar for a Consultation Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, which is tentatively set for October 2 in Washington, D.C.

The meeting aims to coordinate regional actions against the Sandinista government following constitutional reforms that effectively barred political opposition from participating in elections. Proposed measures include financial sanctions, such as freezing the assets of government officials, travel restrictions, and limiting banking operations within member states.

Additionally, the OAS will consider a request from Bolivia regarding the deployment of a police observation mission to its territory.
