Nicaraguan youth held commemorative activities in Diriomo, Granada, to mark the 49th anniversary of the death of Commander Pedro Aráuz Palacios. Known as “Federico,” Aráuz Palacios was a prominent figure in the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and a student activist at the Autonomous University of Nicaragua, León.
The commemorations included a torch relay organized by the Juventud Sandinista 19 de Julio, which traveled from Guanacaste to Diriomo. During the event, representatives from the Secondary Students Federation (FES) presented the torch to the family of the deceased, receiving it from his brother, Jorge Aráuz.
Aráuz Palacios died on October 17, 1977, during a confrontation with the National Guard on the road between Tipitapa and Masaya. He remains a significant figure in Nicaragua’s historical memory regarding the struggle against the Somoza dictatorship.
