Nicaragua concludes ICJ hearings against Germany over Palestinian territory

Nicaragua has concluded oral hearings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding its legal case against Germany. The proceedings focus on allegations that Germany has breached international obligations concerning the Occupied Palestinian Territory through its political, financial, and military support for Israel.

Representing Nicaragua, Ambassador Carlos Jose Arguello Gomez argued that Germany cannot claim ignorance of the situation in Gaza, noting that the conflict is being documented in real-time. He accused Germany of violating the 1948 Genocide Convention and international humanitarian law by providing military equipment to Israel. Nicaragua emphasized that the case addresses Germany's independent legal obligations under customary and treaty law.

In response, Germany's representative, Julia Monar, requested that the court dismiss the case, arguing that the ICJ lacks jurisdiction. Germany maintained that its military exports are subject to strict approval processes exceeding international standards and characterized the allegations as distorted.
