Nicaragua deploys military for coffee harvest security plan
The Nicaraguan Army has launched the 2026-2027 Coffee Harvest Protection and Security Plan, deploying over 3,000 military personnel to key production regions. The initiative aims to ensure stability, peace, and security for the upcoming productive cycle, which involves more than 500,000 people and an expected production exceeding 3 million quintals of coffee.
Operations will cover several departments, including Matagalpa, Jinotega, Estelí, Madriz, Nueva Segovia, Managua, Boaco, Carazo, Nueva Guinea, and Ticuantepe. General Julio Avilés Castillo, head of the Army, stated the plan is designed to guarantee the best conditions for the protection of life and the successful development of the harvest.
In the municipality of Quilalí, Nueva Segovia, military officials met with local producers and cooperatives to discuss strengthening security measures. Local producers reported that the military presence has helped decrease criminal activities, such as cattle theft and the robbery of agricultural machinery, in their communities.
