Nicaragua to release 1,500 prisoners amid rising crime concerns

Rosario Murillo has announced the mass release of approximately 1,500 prisoners scheduled for Monday, September 21. The individuals will be released under the framework of ‘convivencia familiar’ (family coexistence).

The release is distributed across several departments, including Managua (376), Granada (319), Matagalpa (294), Juigalpa (131), León (120), Estelí (110), Bluefields (84), and Chinandega (66). While official statements suggest these individuals are returning home to pursue new lives in peace, the announcement comes amid rising public concern regarding an increase in violent street crimes, including armed robberies and motorcycle-related thefts.
