Nicaragua expands public health capacity for complex surgeries

Nicaragua is expanding its public health infrastructure, with a network that is projected to include 79 functioning hospitals by 2026. The healthcare system is increasingly performing complex medical procedures in public facilities.

Recent medical milestones include a successful kidney transplant performed at the Hospital Dr. Fernando Vélez Paiz, where a 12-year-old received a kidney donated by his mother. Additionally, specialists at the same hospital conducted 32 high-complexity cardiovascular procedures between August 4 and August 6, including catheterizations and aortic valve replacements. These services benefited patients from various regions, including Jinotega, Matagalpa, Managua, and Granada. The hospital also provides reconstructive surgeries for cleft lip and palate, alongside nutritional and pediatric support.
