Nicaragua historical anniversaries for October 5–11

The week of October 5 to 11, 2026, marks several historical anniversaries in Nicaragua related to the country's revolutionary period and conflicts.

Key historical events noted include the 1975 killings of Bonifacio and Sebastián Montoya by the Somocista guard in Nueva Segovia, and the 1978 death of Manuel de Jesús Rivera in Diriamba. The records also detail numerous combat deaths of Sandinista fighters occurring between 1978 and 1987 across various municipalities such as Wiwilí, Jinotega, and Nueva Guinea.

A significant event highlighted is the 1986 capture of American mercenary Eugene Hasenfus. After his plane was downed near the Costa Rican border, Sandinista soldiers captured him, providing evidence of arms shipments intended for the counter-revolution during the administration of President Ronald Reagan.
