Nicaragua intensifies mosquito control efforts amid shifting disease trends

Nicaragua's Ministry of Health (MINSA) has implemented a nationwide campaign to combat mosquitoes that transmit dengue, zika, and chikungunya. Vice Minister Carlos Sáenz stated that fumigation and larvae control efforts are being carried out across all 153 municipalities to eliminate both male and female mosquitoes.

The initiative, known as 'Plan Calache,' involves coordination with local governments to collect old items and debris that could serve as breeding sites. Health officials have urged citizens to allow brigadiers to enter homes for treatment and to seek medical attention immediately if fever occurs, especially during the rainy season.

Epidemiological data for the week ending September 19 shows a decrease in several diseases. Cases of dengue, chikungunya, pneumonia, influenza, and leptospirosis all saw declines compared to the previous week. However, malaria cases experienced a slight increase, rising by six to a total of 86, while no zika cases were reported.
