Nicaragua protests Costa Rica over calls for military intervention
Nicaragua is facing escalating regional tensions and internal pressure. The Nicaraguan government has filed a formal protest against Costa Rica, accusing the Movimiento Campesino Anticanal—a group of exiles—of using minors to call for international military intervention against the Ortega-Murillo administration. Co-Chancellor Valdrack Jaentschke described the use of children in political statements as an “inadmissible violation of their fundamental rights.”
Simultaneously, the Organization of American States (OAS) is increasing pressure on Managua. Secretary General Albert Ramdin has called on member states to take collective measures following the Nicaraguan National Assembly's decision to bar individuals labeled as “traitors to the homeland” from participating in elections. This move is seen as a step toward a single-party system.
Diplomatic relations have also deteriorated between Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, leading to the closure of the Nicaraguan embassy in Santo Domingo. Domestically, the Ministry of the Interior has denied an operating certificate to the disability advocacy group Los Pipitos, resulting in the immediate dismissal of several workers with disabilities due to the organization's inability to access social security subsidies.
